Nürnberg, privately published, (n.d., but circa 1825). 8vo (20.1 x 12.0 cm). pp. v-viii; 12 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary blind grey/black mottled paper covered boards. Original printed wrappers bound in.

Nice, very rare, early 19th-century booklet with many engravings of flowering plants, insects, shells, fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds, and mammals, by the German engraver, botanist, entomologist and zoologist Jacob Sturm (1771-1848). The first plate shows a Mexican volcano. With two and a half plates, the mammal section forms the majority of the illustrations. The text gives descriptions of all the plates. The work uses Schubert's 1823 Lehrbuch der Naturgeschichte für Schulen as a reference. Text page numbers i-iv not used (perhaps not published). The Leipziger Literatur-Zeitung (No. 40) of 16 February 1826 contains a review of this work, recording a price of one Thaler for an uncoloured copy, and mentioning the plate descriptions but no other text. OCLC records only two copies, both in German libraries, one with the same number of text pages, the other without further information. Boards and spine much rubbed; the plate margins thumbed, otherwise a very good copy. Horn-Schenkling, 21706; Nissen ZBI, 4031.
