Stockholm, Lars Salvius, 1759. In four issues. 8vo (22.0 x 14.0 cm). 317, ix pp. Original blind wrappers.
The official journal of the Swedish Academy of Sciences for the year 1759, with contributions by Linnaeus, Thunberg, and others. Topics include mineralogy, medicine, physics, entomology, malacology, botany, etc. Included are three papers by Linnaeus, viz., Om Petrificacet Entomolithus paradoxus [described after a specimen in the collection of Count Tessin]; Om den å kallade Påfogel-stenen; and Om Svensk Coccionelle. The paper on Påfogel-stenen is groundbreaking in palaeontology "A paper by renowned eighteenth century Swedish naturalist, Carl Linnaeus, published in 1759, contained the first fossil reconstruction of what was later called a trilobite and was an early milestone in invertebrate palaeontology. The earliest work devoted solely to Palaeozoic trilobites (Arthropoda), Linnaeus's 'Petrificatet Entomolithus paradoxus …' delved, in great detail, into the classification of this genus intermedium between known marine crustaceans" (Stilwell). Uncut, creating a mix of "normal", and very wide margins. Spines singed, fraying and a few short tears to the front wrapper margins of the first part, weak, mostly marginal damp-staining; stronger in the index and a few preceding leaves in the fourth part, and the first leaves of the third part (with some moulding; chip in pp. 77-78 (not a Linnaeus page), reaching the text; otherwise a good, clean set. Soulsby, 1017 (the fossil insect, Entomolithus); 1023 (Påfogelsten); 1190 (Cochenille, Hemiptera); Stilwell, J. D. (2006). Trilobites and Linnaeus: the first fossil reconstruction from 1759.
