Poggendorff, J. C. (ed.)
Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Sechse Reihe. Band I - X. [Complete].
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1874-1877. Ten volumes in ten. 8vo (21.1 x 13.0 cm). Over 4000 pp.; numerous plates (several larger, folded). Contemporary uniform quarter cloth over marbled boards. Spines with gilt bands and title.
The complete sixth series, edited by Johann Christian Poggendorff (1796-1876), and containing his biography and bibliography, as well as several papers of great importance to the development of physical and chemical sciences, for instance the final work on Experimental-Untersuchungen über die elastische Nachwirkung bei der Torsion, Ausdehnung und Biegung, by the German physicist Friedrich Wilhelm Georg Kohlrausch (1840-1910). Several papers deal with mineralogy. Poggendorff - perhaps best known for a scientific encyclopaedia bearing his name - was editor of the Annalen from 1824 onwards. The tenth and last volume of the sixth series is also the 160th volume under his direction, and the 236th volume since the start of this influential periodical, which later became the most important medium for Albert Einstein and other major physicists. Some light shelf-wear; one front hinge partly split; marginal age-toning, and scattered, mostly mild spotting, otherwise a very good, complete set.
