London, John Murray, 1891-1892. Two parts in two. 8vo (22.7 x 16.1 cm). 549 [xxiv, 456; xxii, 147] pp.; 34 plates, four maps (one in rear pocket), numerous text figures. Uniform original cloth with bevelled edges, and gilt ornaments across the top and bottom of the front boards and spines; embossed on the rear board. Spines with gilt title.

Rare with the supplement, which - a bit odd - was published before the main work (some claim that there is an 1891 first edition, but that seems to be wrong; this edition states: "copyright 1891"). The main work richly illustrated. The also well-illustreated supplement contains reports on the zoology and dealing mainly with the insects, including new Coleoptera by Henry Bates (one of his last papers - Bates died in 1892), and, for instance, a finely illustrated contribution on Reptilia and Amphibia by Boulenger. Uncut, partly unopened. Hinges a bit rubbed and in the main work with a small cut, otherwise an attractive clean set. Horn-Schenkling II(1), p. 210 (for Bates); Vanzolini I, p. 160 (for Boulenger).
