Leiden, E. J. Brill, 1905-1914. Seven volumes in seven. 8vo (text volume 25.3 x 17.5 cm; atlases 24.0 x 16.5 cm). Two title pages to the text volume, one each to the plate volumes; viii, 652 pp., 481 groups of figures on 149 plates with explanatory text leaves. Original uniform printed wrappers (first atlas volume with original blind wrappers).

This is the complete Volume VI of Flora von Buitenzorg with one text volume and six "figuren''-atlases. Between 1905 and 1924 the Dutch botanist Johannes Jacobus Smith (1867-1947) explored the Malay Archipelago and in particular the island of Java (Indonesia) in search of plant species, which he described and illustrated in great detail. This orchid monograph was issued as part of the Flora von Buitenzorg(other parts dealing with mosses, liverworts, etc.), but also as a stand-alone, hence the two different title pages in the text volume. Uncut, unopened. Not the 1984 reprint. The first plate-volume has contemporary blind wrappers, as we have seen more often. In fact, we do not know of copies with printed wrappers. Front wrapper of text volume and sixth atlas a bit spotted, otherwise clean, unmarked. In all a very good set. Very uncommon, especially when still in original wrappers. Stafleu and Cowan, 12.265
