Conway, W. M.
Ascensions et explorations a sept mille mètres dans l'Himalaya.
Paris, Hachette, 1898. 8vo (17.9 x 11.4 cm). Title page with pictorial vignette, v, 242 pp.; frontispiece and 47 illustrations, mostly after photographs, and a map. Later black cloth with gilt title on the spine. Original pictorial front wrapper bound in.
A nice copy of the rare French translation of this work on mountaineering and exploration in the Karakorum-Himalayas by the British cartographer, mountaineer, mathematician, professor of Fine Arts, and politician William Martin Conway, 1st Baron Conway of Allington (1856-1937). He wrote many scholarly works on art, on mountaineering, and no less than two autobiographies. This work was first published in a different format in the Hachette journal, Le Tour du Monde (volume 71), followed by this version, which is the first in book form. Well-illustrated. The translation and editing was done by Henri Jacottet (1856-1904), editor of "Tour du monde. Nouveau journal des voyages". Faint spotting in places, otherwise a very good copy. Neate, 175 (original edition).
