Wien, Carl Gerold's Sohn, 1898-1899. Two parts in two. 4to (29.5 x 23.6 cm). Title pages,110 pp. [56; 54]; three folding maps in black and red [2; 1], 8 [4; 4] double-sized photographic views. Original uniform blind half cloth over printed boards.

The complete narrative of an important geographical, oceanographical, and zoological expedition to the Red Sea with fine photographic views. This Beschreibener Theil [descriptive part] is much rarer than most of the parts belonging to the scientific research results, which deal with aspects of the flora and fauna. Written by the Austro-Hungarian admiral and commander of the Austrian research vessel "Pola", Paul Friedrich August Edler von Pott (1842-1903). The very large, detailed maps show, e.g., coral reefs and the ship's itinerary. The Nördliche Hälfte is signed, on the front free endpaper recto, by the German zoologist Karl Möbius (1825-1908). Some light wear to the boards, spine cover of the first part partly split at foot; book-block and inner hinges, however, intact. A very good set. Cat. BM(NH) Supplement, p. 42.
