London, Taylor and Francis, 1884. 8vo (22.4 x 14.1 cm, and 23.0 x 15.8 cm). xxv, 684 pp.; 54 lithographed plates (some partially coloured) [AND] London, The Zoological Society, 1881. 141 pp.; ten lithographed plates. The first title in original embossed and gilt-lettered cloth; the second in recent boards with printed paper label on the front board.

A rare ensemble of the two publications on the Alert voyage, together being all zoological results published. It is very rare to find the 1884 book together with the 1881 publication from the Proceedings of the Zoological Society. This additional work gives the results of the investigations that were carried out in the Magellan strait and Patagonia, regions which were not covered in the 1884 work. It is much rarer than the other part. This 1884 title deals with the surveys around and on Pacific and Indian Ocean islands. Contains: Summary of the voyage by R.W. Coppinger, Mammalia by O. Thomas (this section describes skulls of Torres Straits and Banks Islanders), Aves by Sharpe, reptiles, batrachians and Pisces by Guenther, molluscs by E.A. Smith. (83, 22, 23 pp., and 4, 1, 3 plates), Echinodermata by Bell, crustaceans by Miers, Coleoptera by Waterhouse, Lepidoptera by Butler, Alcyonaria and sponges by Ridley. 54 nice plates in total. Inobtrusive library stamps and call number on the spine foot, otherwise a very good copy of this scarce work, which is not often seen in an original binding. The second volume, published in the Society's Proceedings bound in recent old style paper boards, old stamp of a Swedish natural history society on first page, this page also somewhat thumbed and soiled. Some damp-staining on first few pages, an occasional foxing spot, a few pencil annotations. A rather good copy. Horn-Schenkling II(3), p. 397; Nissen ZBI, 4755.
