Gray, J. E. [AND] B. W. Hawkins (illustrator)
Concentric Francolin Partridge (female), Perdix concentrica [AND] Javanese peacock (head). [J. E. Gray's Illustrations of Indian Zoology, plate 53].
[London, Treutel, Wurtz, Treutel Jr. and Richter, 1831]. Folio (47.5 x 33.5 cm). Single leaf. Finely lithographed and originally hand-coloured by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. In wide-margined cardboard frame (68.0 x 50.0 cm).
This is Plate 53 of J. E. Gray's amazing Illustrations of Indian Zoology; chiefly selected from the collection of Major-General Hardwicke, F.R.S. (1830-1835; this plate 1831 - see Sawyer), printed by Engelmann. Nowadays it has become a very rare work. The artist is the British-American sculptor, illustrator, and zoologist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1894). He was "renowned for his work on the life-size models of dinosaurs in the Crystal Palace Park in south London. The models, accurately made using the latest scientific knowledge, created a sensation at the time. Hawkins was also a noted lecturer on zoological topics" (Wikipedia). The Javanese peacock, better known as Green Peacock is the species Pavo muticus Linnaeus, the national bird of Myanmar. Plate numbered in pencil. Lower margin irregularly spotted, largely covered by the cardboard frame, otherwise an excellent, clean copy. According to Zimmer no text other than the captions was published.
