Paris, Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, 1877. 4to (27.8 x 22.1 cm). 184 pp. [numbered 139-322]; six maps and plates, including a very large, multifolded map of Morocco and adjacent areas. Original blue wrappers with printed label on the spine.
A detailed geographical and topographical work on the landmarks and archaeology of the ancient Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana, roughly present-day Morocco, with the names of settlements, rivers, mountains, etc., etc., as known from the days of the ancient Greeks until the mid-19th century. One plate shows ancient monuments. Written by the French diplomat and archaeologist Charles Joseph Tissot (1828-1884). Published in the academy's Mémoires, together with a few, smaller contributions. Uncut. Small bookseller's stamp on the front wrapper, otherwise clean. The bookblock split, but Tissot's paper completely intact. A very good copy.
