Schröck, L.
Historia Moschi, ad normam Academiae Naturae Curiosorum.
Augsburg, Theophil Göbel, 1682. 4to (19.7 x 15.8 cm). Engraved allegorical title, letterpress title page, [x], 124, [v] pp.; three engraved plates (one folded), large wood-engraved vignette. Contemporary blue paper boards. Spine with small dark red morocco label with gilt border and title. Edges red.
Rare, first monograph on the "Moschus", or Musk deer, Moschus moschiferus. This should not be confused with the muskox Ovibus moschatus, which is an Arctic animal related to goats. "Musk deers [SIC] have been hunted for their scent glands, which can fetch up to $45,000/kg on the black market. It is rumored that ancient royalty wore the scent of the musk deer and that it is an aphrodisiac" (Wikipedia). Indeed, the scent glands form an important part of this study by the German medical doctor and naturalist Lukas Schröck (1646-1730). This, in fact, is his thesis. The outer margin on a few leaves with irregular, excavated edges; otherwise fine. A very good, clean, unmarked copy. Cat. BM(NH) 8, p. 1162.
