Rare, first monograph on the "Moschus", or Musk deer, Moschus moschiferus. This should not be confused with the muskox Ovibus moschatus, which is an Arctic animal related to goats. "Musk deers [SIC] have been hunted for their scent glands, which can fetch up to $45,000/kg on the black market. It is rumored that ancient royalty wore the scent of the musk deer and that it is an aphrodisiac" (Wikipedia). Indeed, the scent glands form an important part of this study by the German medical doctor and naturalist Lukas Schröck (1646-1730). This, in fact, is his thesis.
