Leiden, The Society for the Promotion of the Scientific Exploration of the Dutch Colonies [Leyden, E. J. Brill; Amsterdam, H. Gerlings], 1902. 4to (27.6 x 19.0 cm). 604 [xix, 529, 56] pp., 89 text figures, 56 plates, three maps (one coloured in outline). Original gilt and black printed decorated cloth.
The first detailed geographical and geological description of central Kalimantan, now part of Indonesia, written by the Dutch geologist Gustaaf Adolf Frederik Molengraaff (1860-1942). Profusely illustrated with fine photographed plates, maps and a comprehensive geological description of the region. In the rear is the English appendix containing the work of G. J. Hinde, " Description of fossil Radiolaria from the rocks of central Borneo, obtained by Prof. Dr. G. A. F. Molengraaff in the Dutch Exploring Expedition of 1893-94". The main work has 52 plates, the 56 pp. appendix by Hinde has four. A separately published atlas is not included. This is the copy of the German-born Dutch geologist Johann Karl Ludwig Martin (1852-1941), who received this copy from Molengraaf himself, as can be seen on the front free endpaper which has Martin's tiny printed label, and Molengraaff's handwriting, dated 4.III.1901. Fig. 89, a correction to map one, tipped in between pp. 418-419; printed correction to the index on p. 520 pasted in; a few light pencil markings, short split in the rear hinge. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1333.
