Rouen, Nicétas Periaux, 1832. Two parts [text and atlas] in one. 4to (26.7 x 21.3 cm). 402 pp. [xvi, 371; 15]; 20 engraved plates (several double-sized), of which 15 in original hand-colouring. Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards; spine with gilt title. Marbled endpapers.

The first and most important contribution to the geology of the French département Seine-Inférieur, written by the geologist Antoine-François Passy (1792-1873). The plates show profiles, views, and fossils. The fossils described and illustrated are of Jurassic and Cretaceous age. Several are described and illustrated as new. The Département Seine-Inférieur is in Normandy, western France, on the right bank of the River Seine, and along the coast of the English Channel, including towns such as Le Havre, Rouen and Dieppe. Provenance: on the title page two old, round stamps, of Secretariat d'Etat a la Production Industrielle, and the Bureau de Recherches Geologiques & Minières, the former also on the first blank recto. Some light shelf wear, occasional light, marginal spotting, plates a bit more spotted, and toned; otherwise, very good, clean, and with ample margins. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1528.
