The American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) wrote a series of biographies and bibliographies of American malacological authors in the series, Occasional Papers on Mollusks, published by the Museum of Comparative Zoology, in Cambridge MA. As a basis for these papers, he accumulated the published works of these malacologists in one or more bound, chronologically arranged, volumes. Often adding previous biographies, obituaries, etc. Johnson included much original material, especially in the case of rarer and more obscure works, as well as photocopies of texts already contained elsewhere in his vast library, e.g., in serials such as American Journal of Conchology, The Nautilus, and Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. This is his convolute of the works of the American malacologist Thomas Bland (1809-1885). In front of both volumes is a 12 pp. paper by A. F. Gray, titled A complete list of the scientific papers of Thomas Bland, F. G. S. from 1852 to 1883 (Salem, MA, The Salem Press, 1884), listing 72 separate items. All but two are included; mostly as offprints (several with handwritten dedications) or excerpts, and in a few cases in photocopy. Only a list of Bermuda land snails published in Alfred Russel Wallace's Island Life, and a note in another Wallace publication are omitted. Among the many original papers is the hefty Land and Fresh Water Shells of North America, co-authored with W. G. Binney. In the second volume we also find an original letter by Bland, to the American malacologist John Ritchie Jr (1851-1931), dated 25 November 1882. A unique item.
