Budapest, Hincz, 1909. Folio (40.5 x 26.0 cm). Original blind half cloth over pebbled boards. 158 samples (each ca. 16.0 x 21.0 cm) on 79 leaves. Large title leaf mounted on the front board, and price list mounted on the front pastedown.

A very rare Art Nouveau/Jugendstil pochoir wallpaper catalogue, Made by the Budapester stencil manufacturers Hincz Lajos és Fia [Lajos Hincz and Son]. A wealth of designs, mostly in pure Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, is shown, each represented by a rectangular sample (two mounted on each leaf), often together with a more or less matching ornamental border strip. The firm's address is given as Futó-Utcza 17, a building which does not exist anymore. An earlier name, apparently given to the firm in 1907, was First Hungarian Artistic Painting Pattern and Relief (Relievo) Factory. At that time, the firm was located at Prater Utcza 28, which still exists. The firm, however, seems to have disappeared without a trace. Wear to the boards, mainly to the edges; some fraying and very short tears to the fore edges; some staining to the endpapers, in particular to the lower margins; some marginal staining to the mounts, one mount partly torn (margins intact), the samples, however, nearly all in fine condition; clean, except for some annotations, here and there (e.g., catalogue numbers); several with different designs on versos. We found no other copies of this catalogue or similar catalogues from the same firm on the internet or elsewhere.
