Hitchcock, E.
An attempt to discriminate and describe the animals that made the fossil footmarks of the United States, and especially of New England.
Boston and Cambridge, MA, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1849. 4to (30.3 x 24.5 cm). 128 pp.; 24 finely lithographed plates (several very large, folded), and one large, folded table. Disbound, no wrappers.
This is a well-illustrated paper by the American geologist (state geologist of Massachusetts) and president of Amherst College, Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864). Hitchcock believed that the footprints belonged to ancient birds. Now they are known to be made by dinosaurs, so he was in fact far from wrong. Published in the Academy's Memoirs. A few small spots in the text, the plates entirely clean. Uncut. With very wide margins. Very uncommon. Cat. BM(NH), p. 849; Sabin, 32241.
