Heim, J. [Publisher]
American Commercial Specimens. Amerikanische Mercantil-Arbeiten.
Wien and Leipzig [printed in Milwaukee], Josef Heim, ca. 1900. Folio (33.0 x 25.1 cm). Title leaf, 32 printed leaves of which 17 tinted, or, mostly, in full colour. Pictorial front wrapper and plain rear wrapper.
A potpourri of American advertising and label designs, meant as examples of the newest trends in commercial communication, apparently aimed at German and Austrian entrepreneurs. It is an early documentation of the growing influence of American culture on Europe, in particular on trade and commerce. Examples shown include beer and whiskey labels. The printer is the American Fine Art Company of Milwaukee (their logo on several leaves). Another, later edition, apparently titled "Second Series", and with only 24 plates, is known. Another antiquarian book-dealer stated "The only listing on OCLC is of a copy with the same pagination in St. Gallen, but with no mention of second series". Wrappers torn at fold. One leaf worn and chipped at edges, one with a short, marginal tear, otherwise very good. Exceedingly rare.
