Batavia, Landsdrukkerij, 1892. Large 8vo (25.9 x 17.8 cm). 518 pp.; one map of the botanical gardens at Bogor (Indonesia), five tissue-guarded portraits, two maps. Original half cloth over printed boards. Printed label on the spine.

Important contribution to the history of the famous tropical garden at Bogor near Djakarta (Indonesia), covering the first 75 years of a garden that still exists today. Written by the Dutch botanist Melchior Treub (1851-1910), director of the Buitenzorg botanical gardens, it contains a long list of plants found in this garden and an introduction to the scientific research in this same garden throughout most of the 19th century. A peculiar copy, with 17 related newspaper clippings mounted on the front pastedown, first blank verso, and first preface leaf, and annotations in ink on the front free endpaper recto, as well as a few light pencil annotations in text pages margins, Boards a bit rubbed at edges, front inner joint broken, otherwise a good copy. Rare. Especially in the original printed boards. Cat. BM(NH) p. 283 (under Buitenzorg, listing a 1894 octavo edition, and a 1893 German edition).
