Koch, G. von
Die Gorgoniden des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeresabschnitte. Erster Theil einer Monographie der Anthozoa Alcyonania.
Berlin, R. Friedländer & Sohn, 1887. Large 4to (31.9 x 25.5 cm). x, 99 pp.; ten lithographed plates of which six partly tinted or coloured, and four in fine chromolithography, 51 text engravings. Contemporary half vellum over marbled boards. Spine with burgundy morocco label with gilt title.
One of the earlier parts of the famous Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel. Written by the German zoologist Gottlieb von Koch (1849-1914), and dedicated to the great Italian marine biologist Filippo Cavolini (1756-1810), author of the groundbreaking Memorie per servire alla storia de' polipi marini (1785). Although the title states that this is the first part, this actually is all that was published. This rarely-seen work took 20 years to complete. A very good clean copy of the original publication, with all the fine plates. (Modern) reprints are no match. Very rare. Nissen ZBI, 2257.
