's-Gravenhage, Martinus Nijhoff, 1910. Two parts in one. 8vo (25.0 x 16.2 cm). 489 [327; 162] pp. Original printed wrappers.

Published in the Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indië, being the complete volume 64, or series 7(10). Rumphius (1627-1702) is best known for his posthumous, edited publications Herbarium Amboinense, d'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer and Thesaurus imaginum piscium testaceorum. He enlisted with the Dutch East Indies Company in 1652 and took up residence in Amboina in 1653, but developed problems with his eye-sight. By the time the Herbarium Amboinense was ready for publication in 1670, he had become totally blind. The poor man's bad luck did not cease, because in 1674 his wife was killed in an earthquake and in 1687 his library was destroyed in a fire also incinerating the original drawings for the Herbarium Amboinense. Uncut. Clean, unmarked, as published. Definitely rare in this exceptional and original condition.
