London, The Royal Society, 1767. 4to (21.9 x 16.8 cm). 46 pp. [numbered 312-357]. 20th-century dark grey buckram with silver title on the spine.

A rare work, published in the Society's Philosophical Transactions, Volume 57. Written by the German naturalist and zoologist of Scottish descent, Johann "John" Reinhold Forster (1729-1798), describing a collection of natural history objects, including plants, minerals, fish, lizards, snakes, and birds from the Volga region, chiefly in today's Russia. Forster is remembered as the official naturalist - replacing Joseph Banks - on the Resolution with Captain Cook (second Pacific voyage). Ex-libris of former owner pasted to inner front board. A very good, clean copy.
